Beginners Aculeates - some species that are reasonably easy to identify
Most aculeates require skill and experience to identify confidently. However there are a number of species that with practice, can be recognised with a reasonable amount of confidence. Some of these species are described here.

If you are thinking about recording aculeates seriously, you may wish to start out by trying to recognise these distinctive species. Later, or even earlier, you may wish to invest in equipment , keys and time to attend workshops to learn how to identify the majority of British aculeates.
Bees
Osmia rufa - The Red Mason Bee
Andrena fulva - The Tawny Mining Bee
Anthidium manicatum - The Wool Carder Bee
Anthophora plumipes - The Hairy Footed Flower Bee

Wasps
Vespa crabro - The Hornet
Dolichovespula media - The Median Wasp
Philanthus triangulum - The Bee Wolf

Is it a Sphecid wasp?

Identification hints to help you decide if your wasp is a Sphecid wasp, or another aculeate, or not an aculeate at all. Very useful for beginners.
