| Recognition: An
orangey-red haired bee. The female has two horn like protuberances on its
face. Nests in holes in timber and walls. Seals nest entrances with a plug
of mud. Flies in April - June, peaking in May. A hand lens will be required
to see the horn like protuberances on this bee's face. The male lacks these
horns. Similar species: Other mason bees (Osmia
species) - but none of the common species are red-orange coloured.
Status - very common in many areas of Britain.
